Biography

Franz Bittenbinder is a German-Hungarian architect and PhD Candiate at the DAStU Department at Politecnico di Milano currently enrolled in the programme of Preservation of the Architectural Heritage. His research interest lies in the history of architecture and preservation in Central-Eastern Europe. In his dissertation, he deals with the  dissemination of architectural heritage during Hungarian state-socialism and the legacy of National Inspectorate for Monuments (1957-1992). He is founder of All Eyes on Budapest, an online archive of 20th century architecture in Budapest.

 

Previously he worked 3 years at HENN, an international architecture firm, based in Munich and Berlin. There he was involved in the BIM aided refurbishment projects of the German Federal bank in Frankfurt, built in 1972, and the Gasteig cultural centre in Munich, completed in 1984. Between his Masters' degree and HENN he co-founded Atelier Marsala, a design firm in the field of architecture and visual branding, as well as the research collective GruppoTorto. In 2018, Atelier Marsala participated at the Unfolding Pavilion in Venice, and GruppoTorto's work has been featured at the Dutch contribution for the Architecture Biennale.

 

He received his basic architectural training at the Technical University of Karlsruhe and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya followed by a one-year traineeship at Herzog & De Meuron in Basel, Switzerland, after which he obtained his MSc degree summa cum laude at the Politecnico di Milano.

GruppoTorto, founded in 2016, is a research collective of young architects who graduated at Politecnico di Milano and work now in different international studios across Europe. The main research topics revolve around architecture and urbanism whereby the focus is directed on the analysis of dysfunctional conditions of our cities. The group is based on the common effort of  Franz Bittenbinder, Martina Bovo, Marcello Carpino, Claudia Consonni, Mattia Inselvini, Chiara Lippi, Gianmario Pandozzi, Enrico Pinto and Luigi Savio.

Atelier Marsala, co-founder (2016-2018)

 

Atelier Marsala is a Milan based practice for architecture and visual branding. AM offers a wide range of services varying from feasibility studies, concept proposals, preliminary up to detailed planning. In terms of visual branding AM creates a corporate identities for the emerging firms and adapts to their personal needs. In order to reflect the brand and its values AM offers the full design packages (XL, L, M, S) available in forms of communication material such as logos, brochures, catalogues, also photoshootings and social media.

EstLab, external Researcher (since 2018)

 

EstLab is an international platform based on interdisciplinary research focusing on the mutual relation between architecture and ideology in Eastern Europe with particular focus on Post-communist condition, heritage protection and urban renewal and transformations. Alessandro De Magistris and Ivica Covic are the founders and scientific coordinators. Alessandro De Magistris, is architect and full professor of History of Architecture and History of Urbanism teaching at the Politecnico di Milano - Scuola di Architettura e Società, at the Department of Architecture and Urban studies (DAStU), and the member of Doctoral School Committee at the Doctoral School of Architecture and History at the Politecnico di Torino. Ivica Covic is assistant professor in Architecture and Landscape Design at Politecnico di Milano, Faculty of Architecture and Society; Visiting professor at Faculty of Architecture of University of Zagreb(PhD program); Lecturer and long-term teaching and research collaboration with Domus Academy (Master in Urban Vision and Architectural Design).
